We’ll be posting tips for beginners.  We’ll also be posting discussions of the difference between the official rules of mah jongg and what we refer to as “house rules.”  The official rules are those endorsed by the National Mah Jongg League and are used in mah jongg tournaments.  House rules are those used informally that have been created by players to make their games more fun, fast and accessible.  Interestingly, some house rules have been widely adopted and are more commonly used than the official rules.  House rules are especially widespread among folks who have been playing for decades or recently learned from someone who has been playing for decades.  Check out our “Tips” and “House Rules” posts to learn more.
