It’s hard to believe that mah jongg can be bad for your health, but the New York Times reported this week that sitting too long while playing mah jongg was linked to a blood clot. Apparently, a 40 year old woman who played intensely for eight hours straight ended up in the hospital. She was diagnosed with “mah-jongg-related deep-vein thrombosis.” Let this be a lesson for all of us: It’s a good idea to take breaks when playing. We should all remember to stand up and stretch between rounds. Playing with a fifth player can also help because it will force everyone to take a break every five rounds and move around. In addition, if you are playing for a long time, be sure to eat and drink! To read the article, click here.
